Emilie de Tourville tells the story of an unfortunate younger sister, whose elder, lawyer brothers exact revenge on her for compromising their family's honour. The work is 'fuelled by indignation against a social order that places a premium on women's premarital virginity' (from Andrew Brown's introduction to 'Betrayal' by the Marquis de Sade, published by Hesperus Press, 2006).
