This novella, although lesser known than works such as 'The Portrait of a Lady' and 'The Wings of the Dove', is a fantastic introduction to James. A perfect example of the psychological complexity and the tension between the inner and outer worlds for which James's work is famed, it is considerably shorter than his other works, and can thus serve as an example of James 'in miniature'.
