Initially published in 'The Prussian Officer and Other Stories' in 1914, 'Daughters of the Vicar' was singled out to be published as a single volume by Hesperus Press in 2004 because it is one of Lawrence's most expertly crafted novellas. Its brevity (it stands at less than 100 pages in length) makes it a perfect introduction to Lawrence, while its themes of poverty, loss, and the increasingly inability of man to love and be loved in the modern world, resonate throughout Lawrence's more major works.
