I first read the novels of Elizabeth Gouge when in my late teens and early twenties, starting with the triology "The Elliots of Damerosehay" - The Bird in the Tree, the Herb of Grace and The Heart of the Family, and was profoundly moved by the development of the members of this family. I was probably at a time of emotional development in my own life, and so lthe sentiments struck a choir. Perhaps these books may seem a little sentimental today, but in fact deep problems are considered and resolved, the pain involved in the resolution faced and an outcome which seems realistic achieved. These stories are an antidote to the idea that we can have what WE want in life without the lives of others being affected often in painful ways. Also that as we mature, there are things which must be renounced, put aside, come to terms with. Otherwise we achieve only the kind of happiness which attempts to hide guilt at what one has done to hurt others in achieving this selfish state. Contentment and peace with onesself are worth more than simple happiness although we may not see this at the time. I think Elizabeth Gouge was a profound writer in many ways, whilst being able to paint a vibrant picture of life which was easily accessible.
She wrote delightful children's books and historical novels, but this trilogy I feel is the best of her writing.
