about Mary Doria Russell 2006-06-12 09:46:10

I just finished reading A Thread of Grace, and I would have to say that it is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It's easy to see why it took Mary so long to write it because she was dealing with such an intricate and sensitive topic as World War II and how the simplest of peasants stood up to the powers that be. Everything about it rings true. If you love historical fiction and Italy and characters you won't soon forget, then I urge you to read this.

Gilead is one of the most beautiful books that I have ever read. It was a pleasure reading a book with such a memorable voice and story as that of Rev. John Ames.

about William Trevor 2006-03-03 08:46:27

William Trevor is the master of the short story. His novels and novellas are quite good, but to have The Collected Stories on your bedside table would not be a mistake. It is often after reading one of his stories that you realize what a punch each one packs. He writes mostly of his native Ireland and of England, where he lives, and occasionally Italy.

The Sparrow was a wonderful ride that I have recommended countless times to my friends. The ending is slightly disappointing, but the world that Ms. Russell creates is mesmerizing.

Children of God is the sequel to The Sparrow. It isn't as strong in some respects, though it does have better payoff. If, after reading The Sparrow, you do not want to say good-bye to the characters, read this.
