Pamela Lyndon Travers (9 August 1899 - 23 April 1996) was born Helen Lyndon Goff in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, was the author of Mary Poppins and a student of G. I. Gurdjieff.
She was a dancer and an actress, appearing mainly in Shakespearean plays in Australia and New Zealand. In 1924, she moved to England to write and adopted the pen name Pamela Travers. Her first Mary Poppins novel in 1934 was an immediate success.[1]
As well as being a novelist, she was a published poet. She knew William Butler Yeats and T. S. Eliot. She preferred to be called P. L. Travers (the two first initials were used to disguise a woman's name, a practice common to writers from J. K. Rowling to D.C. Fontana).
Goff was born to bank manager Travers Robert Goff and Margaret Agnes (ne้ Morehead). Her father died when she was seven and although "epileptic seizure delirium" was given as the cause of death, Travers herself "always believed the underlying cause was sustained, heavy drinking".[2] Although she never married, she adopted a boy when she was in her late 30s.[3]
