Jung Chang was born in Sichuan Province, China in 1952. Her parents were mid-level cadres in the Communist Party. During the Cultural Revolution they were targeted by extremists and sent into "internal exile". Chang herself was sent to live in a very primitive commune and became a "barefoot doctor". After the death of Mao Zedong she completed her university education and left to study in England.
She published "Wild Swans" in 1991. It is the story of three generations of women in her family, their lives and struggles under feudalism, warlords, the Japanese invasion and finally Maoism.
She lives in England with her husband, the writer and scholar Jon Halliday.
