We studied "Anne of Green Gables" in high school many years ago. I loved it! I loved Anne (with an 'e'). That was my mother's name.

The redheaded orphan with the grey eyes, an imagination and an indefatigable spirit could not be resisted. I went on the read the "Emily" trilogy, the heroine who was most like Miss Montgomery and who aspired to write.

I loved "Pat of Silver Bush", "The Blue Castle", and "Jane of Lantern Hill" and other stories. They give the flavour of rural Canada and Prince Edward Island in the late-19th/early-20th centuries. Her stories are well-crafted and most enjoyable. I recommend them.

Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island in 1874, which makes her 6 and 10 years older that my grandmothers, respectively. She was a Presbyterian, as I am, and she married a Presbyterian minister and went to live in rural Ontario. She had two sons. She wrote many books. I believe most are still in print. She died in 1942.
