Henning Mankell was born in Sweden in 1948. In the 1970s he began working as a dramatist and in 1973 his first novel was published. Since then he has gone on to become the true star of Scandinavian crime the world over. Mankell is a successful author of plays, children's books and several novels for adults. But it is as the prize-winning author of the eight 'Kurt Wallander Mysteries' that he is best known. The Kurt Wallander Mysteries have now sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and have been published to great critical acclaim in both the UK and America.
Mankell divides his time between Sweden and Maputo, Mozambique, where he works as a director at Teatro Avenida. He is passionately committed to the fight against AIDS in Africa and spends much time working to encourage support for his 'Memory Books' project to raise awareness of the problem.
