Born shortly before the invention of writing, Anon is the quintessential writer's writer, moving easily from the cuneiform tablet to the epistolary novel to the blog. The Anonymous canon includes epic poetry, exposé, memoir, religious texts, "Talk of the Town," graffiti, advertising copy, political pamphlets, and love letters.
Given the enduring popularity of this prolific author, surprisingly little is known about the life of Anon. Despite, or perhaps because of, the lack of available biography, Anon is a favorite subject of deconstructionist criticism and pure groundless speculation. Citing the extreme variation in the quality of Anonymous work, Freud theorized that Anon may have suffered from manic-depression. Adverbially, deconstructionists see the wide range of style and content as evidence of multiple personality. Clearly he (or, some have speculated, she) has battled at least one form of addiction, as indicated by a flurry of recent publications on alcoholism and substance abuse. Anon is a philanthropist and a major contributor to numerous charities and cultural foundations.
Personal revelations were eagerly anticipated when Anon's publisher announced it would bring out an autobiography entitled I AM ANONYMOUS. Disappointingly, the book was withdrawn when analysis of the manuscript showed it to be the work of person or persons unknown. (A revised version was later published with the title I AM NOT ANONYMOUS.)
The writings of Anon have been translated into umpteen languages and adapted for the stage, radio, film, and opera.
