Green Grass is the best book I've ever read. I've read a lot of books. I loved it so much I wrote a report on it for my native lit class. First book report I ever enjoyed writing! If you're literary - it's packed full of tongue in cheek literary references. Beware, however, the bible is a book... This novel really showcases the dry native wit. Also the circular/non-linear plot is a deftly handled and a fine reflection of native world view. However, once you read this, you'll be disappointed in Medicine River, not that it isn't good, it just isn't the same. Perhaps you should work you way up to this one....
By the way native fiction written by native authors is a genre unlike others, the formulas aren't predicatible and so it is more of a journey of learning and exploration.
If you find you like native fiction I would also recommend Louis Owens.
