Supposing the "Fool's Guild" of the 12th and 13th centuries was actually a network of highly trained special operatives, the James Bonds of the Middle Ages, carrying out their missions in the political whirl of the Byzantine Empire and the Crusades--undercover as jesters. Theophilus (best remembered now as Feste in "12th Night" and as Lear's Fool) is our talented hero and guide.

These "medieval mysteries" have a very modern sense of humor. The writing and research are top notch. I recommend starting with the first one (Thirteenth Night) and reading them in order.

I am a friend of Alan Gordon and EXTREMELY biased; I have also been a true fan of his writing since he was an undergrad.
