I read the Secret Life of Bees on a reccomendation. I have it on CD and found that listening to it was better for me. I tend to read for plot and I know I would have missed some of the important details that the reading brought out. I reccomend listening to it read as the reader was wonderful. It didn't change my thoughts or beliefs. I grew up in L.A., CA during the 60's and felt the same as the young Lily. I had friends that were a little like the bee keeping ladies. More conventional in their religion, but just as devout.
An excellent read. One that I think should be a requirement of Jr High English or High School. right along with Too Kill a Mockingbird

I enjoyed The Secret Life of Bee's and was excited to read The Mermaid Chair. Sadly, this book was a disappointment and isn't a patch on The Secret Life of Bees...
