Quentin Crisp didn't produce works of art: He WAS one. I really can't imagine reading any of his work without having first fallen under the enchantment of his unique personality -- as chilling for its lacunae as it was captivating for its bravura and stiletto wit. By the way, Sting's song "An Englishman in NY" is about Quentin Crisp.

So if you're looking for WHERE TO START, I suggest video. Watch THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT and any version of "An Evening with Quentin Crisp" on video or audio tape, and RESIDENT ALIEN (which features a scene of QC and John Hurt watching THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT together on television).

THEN if you want to read the books, you'll have Quentin Crisp's voice in your head as you do.

Oh, and if you think you know all about Quentin Crisp, get hold of "The Quentin Crisp Memorial Recording" from Pacifica Radio Archives and you'll enjoy some surprises.
