From the Walker Percy Project at www.ibiblio.org:
Walker Percy was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1916. His father committed suicide in 1929, and in 1931 Walker moved in with his storied uncle, William Alexander Percy, in Greenville, Mississippi. William was a gentleman poet and is best known for his autobiography, "Lanterns on the Levee."
Walker trained as an MD with interests in pathology and psychiatry, but in 1942 he contracted tuberculosis. He was confined to a sanitarium for several years, and began reading more literature and philosophy, especially Existentialism. In 1947 he converted to Catholocism, which also informs his writings.
He died in 1990 of cancer.
