From my point of view, the Count of Monte Cristo is one of the greatest books ever written. I first read the abridged version as a 6th grader, and immediately went on to the unabridged version. While I usually dislike abridged versions of literature, I have been trying to get my 6th grade daughter to read this. It is really amazing.

Both the Count of Monte Cristo and the Three Musketeers are great, fun reads. The Michael York movies of the latter was one of the few movies that managed to be enjoyable and hold true to the book.

My favorite is the Three Musketeers, followed by Man in the Iron Mask and then the Count. I have been put upon by my sister and daughter that the Count is first and foremost the best of his works. All in a matter of opinion. Both my daughter and sister's copies are well worn and dog eared from reading. Some may think this terrible, but I see it as love is it's best form.
Read each Synop and pick the one that intrigues you. You will not have made a bad choice.
