The Four Temperaments is a closely observed and unusually intimate story set in the world of professional ballet in NYC. McDonough's personal background in dance really shows, but the strength of the story is in its sympathetically drawn characters and the powerful emotions that topple their lives. I read it first and recommend starting here.

Born in Chadera, Israel, Ms. McDonough was raised in Brooklyn, NY and edcuated at Vassar College and Columbia University. She studied classical ballet for many years as a young woman, and her passion for the form inspired her novel, THE FOUR TEMPERAMENTS, whose title is taken from a well-known ballet by choreographer George Balanchine. Her second novel, IN DAHLIA'S WAKE, is set in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where she now resides with her family.
