Many people have turned away from Orwell because they were force-fed "1984" or "Animal Farm" in school. A better place to start might be with earlier works like "Down and Out in Paris and London," (1933) a gritty, colorful account of his struggles to survive in menial jobs as a young man. And his little-known early novels, like "Coming Up for Air," are graceful portraits of life in England between the wars, with no talking animals in sight.

1984 and Animal Farm are the standard Orwell books to read, but they are actually both pretty good. It has been a number of years but it may be time for me to reread 1984.
