William Trevor is the master of the short story. His novels and novellas are quite good, but to have The Collected Stories on your bedside table would not be a mistake. It is often after reading one of his stories that you realize what a punch each one packs. He writes mostly of his native Ireland and of England, where he lives, and occasionally Italy.

"A Bit on the Side" and "Cheating at Canasta" are two of his many short story collections. He also has a number of novels. He depicts with superb acuity the loneliness and the subtleties of the human psyche.

William Trevor, 1928 - , County Cork, Ireland. Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and short story writer, probably best known for the latter. Rural Ireland is the setting for many of his works which poignantly evoke every day lives of "ordinary" people. Winner of many awards, including: Whitbread Award (three); The Hawthornden Prize.
