Alma Alexander, perhaps best known for her Secrets of Jin-shei, has written an exciting Young Adult series, WorldWeavers. Reviewers have compared it to Harry Potter, but it's as American as Harry is British. The books feature Thea Winthrop and it embraces American culture, and Native American myths, from Grandmother Spider Coyote the Trickster.
The second book, Spellspam, features spam that carries magic spells that can cause you to babble in strange languages or turn your skin transparent. Thea and her friends are faced with a dangerous dark mage, and Thea is forced to make a bitter choice to save the world.
