Crowley is a difficult read, but no study of the Western Mystery Tradition or modern ceremonial magick is complete without a basic understanding of the man and his works. A good place to start is with his 'Confessions.'
As far as his magical writings are concerned, His "Magick, Liber ABA, Book Four" is a comprehensive text, but hardly for the beginner. "The Magick of Aleister Crowley" by Lon Milo DuQuette is the basic introduction to Crowley and his "Magick".

Aleister Crowley, born Edward Alexander Crowley, (12 October 1875 – 1 December 1947 … was a British occultist, writer and mystic.
He is perhaps best known today for his occult writings, especially The Book of the Law, the central sacred text of Thelema. Crowley was also an influential member in several occult organizations, including the Golden Dawn, the Argenteum Astrum, and Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.).
ther interests and accomplishments were wide-ranging—he was a chess player, mountain climber, poet, painter, astrologer, hedonist, drug experimenter, and social critic.
Crowley himself claimed to be a Freemason, but the regularity of his initiations with the United Grand Lodge of England has been disputed.
Crowley gained much notoriety during his lifetime, and was famously dubbed "The Wickedest Man In the World."
