Born in Hillsboro, West Virginia in 1892. Parents were Presbyterian missionaries. They moved to China when Pearl was 3 months old. She moved back to America in 1910 to attend Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Later earned a Master of Arts degree from Cornell University. Writing career began in 1930. Most famous work is The Good Earth (1931).
